Arts Education

Lynne Rothrock is a gifted and inspiring educator! Her deep knowledge in repertoire and performance in addition to her creative pedagogical techniques are only matched by her warmth and humor. In my observations of Lynne’s teaching, I have consistently witnessed students succeeding in an environment that is both nurturing and challenging. Her positive, open and genuine demeanor is a gift for her students and colleagues alike.

Lynne’s experience in arts education is both broad and deep. Her choral music training at Luther College laid the groundwork for more than thirty years of experience leading clinics and adjudicating traditional choirs, vocal jazz ensembles and show choirs around the country.

Her training and experience in theatre has expanded her work to include artistic and musical direction for theatrical productions in both educational and professional settings. She has developed and directed new work in cabaret-style productions.

Believing that technique is what gives us the freedom to sing, Lynne has focused much of her work on teaching vocal technique to individual singers. At the collegiate level, she teaches classical technique using traditional repertoire in Italian, French, German and English. Led by her own desire to sing other styles of music, Lynne has also trained in Contemporary Commercial Music pedagogies that enable singers to expand their technique to include jazz, pop, musical theatre and country styles.

Lynne has developed a niche for coaching solo performers to truly "act the song" and bring all the elements of performance into their vocal presentations.  Her combination of training in vocal technique and theatre enables her to address issues from both areas and lead students to a combination of peak vocal production and truly artistic presentation.  Her SONGBIRTH workshops are flexible in format and singers have the opportunity to develop their own performance skills, learn from watching their peers perform - and they also will leave with a set of tools with which to approach future work.

She holds a B.A. in Music Education and Theatre from Luther College and a Master's of Music in Voice from Western Michigan University.
